Don't just prune by magnitude! Your mask topology is a secret weapon

Neural Information Processing Systems

Recent years have witnessed significant progress in understanding the relationship between the connectivity of a deep network's architecture as a graph, and the network's performance. A few prior arts connected deep architectures to expander graphs or Ramanujan graphs, and particularly,[7] demonstrated the use of such graph connectivity measures with ranking and relative performance of various obtained sparse sub-networks (i.e.

This is Europe's secret weapon against Trump: it could burst his AI bubble Johnny Ryan

The stark, profound betrayal contained in the Trump administration's national security strategy should stop any further denial and dithering in Europe's capitals.

Trump and Musk's unexpected truce could be America's secret weapon in the global technology race

FOX News

President Trump's relationship with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appeared to blow up last week as the two feuded in public. Let's be honest: Most people thought the Trump–Musk feud would drag on for weeks. After all, you had the president threatening to review SpaceX contracts and the world's richest man reposting Epstein rumors. It looked like a real fracture between two of America's most powerful forces. Then, just like that, it ended with a conciliatory tweet from Elon Musk.

This paper strives to fill in this gap, by analyzing the Weighted Spectral Gap of Ramanujan structures in sparse neural networks and investigates its correlation with final performance. We specifically examine the evolution of sparse structures under a popular dynamic sparse-to-sparse network training scheme, and intriguingly find that the generated random topologies inherently maximize Ramanujan graphs.

Ukraine's 'Secret Weapon' Against Russia Is a Controversial U.S. Tech Company

TIME - Tech

Leonid Tymchenko spent the first month of Russia's invasion sitting in his dark government office after curfew. Unable to go home, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs scrolled through Telegram, looking at thousands of videos and images of advancing Russian soldiers. When Tymchenko was offered a chance to test a new facial-recognition tool, he uploaded some of the photos to try it out. He could not believe the results. Every time Tymchenko added a photo of a Russian soldier, the software, made by the American facial-recognition company Clearview AI, seemed to come back with an exact hit, linking to pages that revealed the soldier's name, hometown, and social-media profile.

Joe Biden Has a Secret Weapon Against Killer AI. It's Bureaucrats

WIRED

As ChatGPT's first birthday approaches, presents are rolling in for the large language model that rocked the world. From President Joe Biden comes an oversized "Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence." And UK prime minister Rishi Sunak threw a party with a cool extinction-of-the-human-race theme, wrapped up with a 28-country agreement (counting the EU as a single country) promising international cooperation to develop AI responsibly. Before anyone gets too excited, let's remember that it has been over half a century since credible studies predicted disastrous climate change. Now that the water is literally lapping at our feet and heat is making whole chunks of civilization uninhabitable, the international order has hardly made a dent in the gigatons of fossil fuel carbon dioxide spewing into the atmosphere.

New breed of military AI robo-dogs could be the Marines' secret weapon

FOX News

The U.S. Marine Corps is testing a new breed of robotic canine that can do much more than fetch and could possibly be headed to the battlefield. It can be outfitted to carry an infantry anti-armor rocket launcher on its back. It can also be equipped with a forward-facing GoPro camera, multiple rails for extra cameras, aiming lasers, and other essential gear.

Putin's secret weapon is Russia's facial recognition surveillance used to punish dissenters

FOX News

Everyone could use a longer battery life on their smartphone. CyberGuy shows you how to change your settings to make your battery last longer. Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing the biggest threat to his authority in decades. It comes after Yevgeny Prigozhin, who leads a private paramilitary group called Wagner, started a violent but brief uprising against Russia that may have long-lasting effects which could bring instability to Putin. If Putin is perceived as weakened by this assault on his leadership, then he is likely to exert aggressive strength in a show of power. CLICK TO GET KURT'S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS AND EASY HOW-TO'S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER What few know is that Vladimir Putin has been building a sophisticated facial recognition surveillance system since 2017 that is likely to be put into overdrive against any citizens willing to take on the views of the Russian leadership and military.

Ukraine's Secret Weapon Against Russia: Turkish Drones

TIME - Tech

In a video that went viral on Twitter Sunday night, a massive explosion rips through what appears to be a Russian convoy, scoring a direct hit on a surface-to-air missile system. The black-and-white footage, posted to the account of the Ukrainian armed forces, is one of several that have emerged on social media in recent days showing the devastating impact of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian hardware. As the drone's payload explodes in the video--which appears to be a cellphone recording of a screen in a Ukrainian drone facility--people at the facility can be heard gasping in awe before breaking out in cheers and applause. The video racked up more than 3 million views on Twitter in two days. There will be no peace for you on our earth!" the Ukrainian armed forces wrote in the video's caption. The star of this video and others circulating on Twitter is the Bayraktar TB2 – a type of Turkish drone that the Ukrainian military has increasingly deployed against Russian forces in recent ...

The Secret Weapon Behind Quality AI: Effective Data Labeling - insideBIGDATA

#artificialintelligence

In this special guest feature, Carlos Melendez, COO, Wovenware, discusses best practices for "The Third Mile in AI Development" – the huge market subsector in data labeling companies, as they continue to come up with new ways to monetize this often-considered tedious aspect of AI development. The article addresses this trend and outlines how it is not really a commodity market, but can comprise different strategies for successful outcomes. Wovenware is a Puerto Rico-based design-driven company that delivers customized AI and other digital transformation solutions that create measurable value for government and private business customers across the U.S. The growth of AI has spawned a huge market subsector and increasing interest among investors in data labeling. In the past year, companies specializing in data labeling have secured millions of dollars in funding and they continue to come up with new ways to monetize this often-considered tedious aspect of AI development. Yet, what can be viewed as the third mile in AI development, data labeling, is also perhaps the most crucial one to effective AI solutions.
